About Us and This Blog

This blog is about two long-time pals, Elan Homer and Rob West, neither in their youth, but friends for over 30 years, who are planning a long-distance cycle trip from Santander in northern Spain to Roscoff in Brittany, in May 2013.

The blog features the planning, preparations and progress of the cycle tour, which is unsupported i.e. all luggage is carried and there is no vehicular back-up.  It is also self-financed. This will be Elan and Rob's first foreign cycle tour; indeed their first long-distance cycle trip beyond local leisure rides.
Three charities were chosen to benefit from any sponsorship or donations that could be raised - please see "Our charities" page for further details on the sums actually raised.

Elan retired in September 2011 at age 60 and was inspired to undertake this trip by Edward Enfield's lovely book, Downhill All The Way, which features a north-south traverse of France.

Rob is in his mid 50s and runs a successful business in Devon. He and his family have visited France many times and enjoy French food, wine and the slower pace of life.  This trip appealed as it combines the aspects of life that Rob enjoys with a chance to work up an appetite and raise money for a special cause!
